Merlin January 1997 - June 20th, 1999
Freya February 1998 - September 20th, 1999
Casanunda January 1998 - June 11th, 2000

On December, 13th, 1998, we adopted three homeless rats from the Swiss Rat Club. Freya, Casanunda and Merlin. Two year old Merlin had won our hearts when we visited the rescue station. We happened to look into another cage and two albino rats stared at us. Freya and Casanunda were too lovely to walk away from.

Merlin had been found as a two year old in an abandoned apartment. He had grown a tumor the size of a tennis ball on his hip. The tumor was removed and Merlin was neutered so he could join another rat group. He lived with us for 6 months, developed hind leg paralysis and died of natural causes one evening.

Casanunda and Freya came from the same place. They had been found when the police had to clean out an apartment where someone had bred lots of animals. We suspect that Casanunda and Freya came from the same family. Freya did not get to be with us for very long, she developed an abscess in her jaw and by the time we discovered it, the abscess had already eaten into her jaw bone. We had to have her euthanized. Casanunda was never ill his entire life and died a quiet natural death.

We miss you, Merlin, Freya and Casanunda.

Merlin's quirks:

Was dubbed Mr. Universe since he loved to pose.
Not a social eater but sometimes a grumpy old man.
Loved toothbrush massages
After losing his tumor, he'd walk around for hours, so much fun it was without the additional weight.

Freya's quirks:

Guardian of her pal Casanunda.
No nonsense rat. Always on the move.
Tiny white beauty with a strong will.

Casanunda's quirks:

Most social rat ever. Intros were a piece of cake.
Dubbed Nundi. He loved every rat at first sight.
Shy and lovable but more a rat's rat than a human's rat.
Shortnosed and a nervous "sneezer".
